Dr Wang replied that he thought it would be much

better not to hand in any note on the subject but to

deal with the matter informally. Let Sir Miles Lampson

tell him what his desires were, and he would see how it

could be arranged with the Minister of Communications.

Bir Hiles Lampson suggested that Dr Wang should

at least read the Aide-hemoire, which would serve as a

verbal explanation.

Dr Wang thereupon read and handed back the Aide-

He pointed out that it was difficult for the

Chinese Government to ascept the point about giving an

assurance that the man would not engage in politics

and would not be a politician.

In other respects the

proposed procedure would be acceptable. He would

communicate the name of the appointes, as suggested,

and confidentially ask the Minister of Communications

instruct him not to dabble in politics.

Sir Miles Lampson took back the memorandum and

reminded Dr Wang that Er Lu was not considered a

suitable man, so that he would await communication of

the name of another individual.
